That smell coming through your vents has a name. And a fix.

The National Fire Protection Association blames HVAC equipment for 42,600 house fires each year. Electrical burning smells demand immediate action. Other odors are less urgent but still tell you something has failed. Fresno's dry, dusty air plus six months of nonstop AC use creates smell patterns we've seen since 1948. Here's what each one means.

Burning plastic, fishy, or gunpowder

Electrical components overheating. Could be a failing capacitor, worn motor bearings, or melted wiring. One exception: the first time you run heat after summer, dust burns off for twenty to thirty minutes. If the smell outlasts that, shut it down.

Wet socks or gym locker room

Mold and mildew growing on the evaporator coil. Fresno's dust creates condensation that turns into biofilm within a day or two. The EPA links mold exposure to respiratory problems.

Fix: Replace the filter. Schedule a coil cleaning with antimicrobial treatment. $150 to $350 in Fresno.

Rotten eggs or sulfur

Get everyone out. Call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 from outside the house.

Exhaust fumes

Carbon monoxide or combustion gas leaking through a cracked heat exchanger. CO itself has no smell but the byproducts do. Symptoms look like the flu: headache, nausea, dizziness. A cracked heat exchanger can kill you.

Ozone or burning insulation

Blower motor windings burning through their coating. Schedule service within 48 hours. Running the motor risks complete failure. Replacement: $400 to $900.

Sewage or something dead

A rodent died in the ductwork. Or a sewer vent backed up near your AC intake. Check visible ductwork for gaps. You'll need a duct inspection and remediation.

Sweet, chemical, or nail polish

Refrigerant leak. Older R-22 or modern R-410A systems develop pinhole leaks over time. Cooling drops 40 percent or more. R-22 costs $150 to $200 per pound and the EPA is phasing it out. If your system needs more than two pounds, replacing the unit costs less than chasing leaks.
