ac not cooling hot hvac system

Your upstairs is 8 to 15 degrees hotter than downstairs. Fix it.

The U.S. Department of Energy confirms what you feel every July: multi-story homes run 8 to 15°F warmer upstairs. Heat rises. Most single-zone AC units treat both floors the same. They can't. In Fresno, where summer temperatures hit triple digits from May through October, an AC that won't cool the second floor isn't uncomfortable. It's a problem you need to solve before August.

JC Melton Air has fixed this for Fresno families since 1948. Here are the five reasons your upstairs won't cool and what each fix costs.

1. Your AC is too small for a two-story home

Builders before 2000 sized AC units by total square footage. They ignored the heat load upstairs. Sun beats on your roof all day. Windows take the brunt of it. Hot air from the first floor rises and pools on the second. A unit rated for 2,000 total square feet can't handle an upstairs in August.

ENERGY STAR reports an undersized AC burns 20 to 40 percent more energy and still leaves rooms hot.

Fix: Get a Manual J load calculation from a NATE-certified technician. JC Melton Air runs one on every installation estimate.

Cost in Fresno: $4,500 to $8,500 for a correctly sized replacement.

2. Your attic ductwork leaks

Most Fresno homes run ducts through the attic. That attic hits 150°F. If your ducts have gaps, kinks, or disconnected sections, cooled air never reaches the upstairs vents. ENERGY STAR says the average home loses 20 to 30 percent of conditioned air through duct leaks.

You'll know because some upstairs rooms cool fine and others bake. The vents barely push air. Dust collects around the openings. Your electric bill climbs past your neighbors'.

Fix: Duct inspection and sealing. Aeroseal can cut leakage up to 90 percent.

Cost in Fresno: $500 to $1,500 for sealing. $3,000 to $7,000 for full replacement.

3. Your attic is an oven radiating into the rooms below

July attic temperatures in Fresno hit 150°F. That heat pushes through your ceiling into the upstairs rooms. If your insulation is thin or packed down, you're air conditioning against a 150-degree ceiling.

California Building Code (Title 24) requires R-30 to R-60 attic insulation for the Central Valley. Pre-2000 homes often have R-11 or worse.

Fix: Blow in cellulose or fiberglass to hit R-38 minimum. Radiant barrier sheathing reflects up to 97 percent of radiant heat.

Cost in Fresno: $1,500 to $3,000 for insulation. $1.50 to $3 per square foot for radiant barrier.

4. Someone closed your upstairs dampers and never opened them

Your ductwork has manual dampers that control airflow between floors. A previous owner or technician closed the upstairs dampers for winter, pushing heat downstairs where the thermostat lives. Nobody opened them back up. Now your upstairs gets almost no AC.

Fix: A technician finds and adjusts your zone dampers. Fifteen minutes if they're accessible.

Check yourself: Look at your furnace for small metal handles on the ductwork. Perpendicular to the duct means closed. Parallel means open.

5. A single thermostat controls everything

Your thermostat sits downstairs. It reads 75°F and shuts off the AC. Upstairs is still 88°F. The system has no idea. It can't know. Nobody gave it a sensor upstairs.

What you can do today

  1. Change the filter. A clogged filter cuts airflow in half. Check it monthly during summer.
  2. Close blinds on south and west windows. Direct sun adds 30 percent to your cooling load.
  3. Run ceiling fans counterclockwise. The wind-chill effect makes rooms feel 4°F cooler.
  4. Leave upstairs doors open. Closed doors starve the return air and create pressure imbalances.
  5. Set the fan to ON, not AUTO. Keeps air moving during peak heat even when the compressor isn't running.

Call a pro when

  • Floors differ more than 10°F
  • Vents whistle or rattle
  • The AC runs nonstop and nothing cools
  • Your bill spikes without explanation
  • Rooms with open vents still feel warm
