Most air conditioners do not fail all at once. They give you warning signs first — subtle changes in how they sound, how they perform, or what shows up on your energy bill. The problem is that during a busy Fresno summer, it is easy to dismiss those early signals until a minor issue becomes an emergency breakdown on the hottest day of the year.

Knowing what to look for can save you from that situation. Here are ten signs that your air conditioner is telling you it needs attention.

Comparison of a clean and dirty air filter

1. Warm or Lukewarm Air Coming From the Vents

This one is hard to ignore. If your AC is running but the air coming out of the vents is not cool, something is wrong. It could be low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or a problem with the condenser coils. Any of these require professional diagnosis — they are not issues a homeowner can resolve without the right equipment and certifications.

2. Weak Airflow Throughout the House

If certain rooms feel stuffy or the airflow from your vents feels noticeably weaker than it used to, the system may be struggling to move air properly. Common causes include a clogged air filter, a failing blower motor, or obstructed ductwork. In some cases, it can also indicate that the system is undersized for the space it is trying to cool — a more significant issue in newer, larger Clovis homes.

3. Unusual Sounds — Grinding, Banging, or Squealing

A properly running air conditioner should sound like background noise. When you start hearing grinding, banging, rattling, or high-pitched squealing, those are mechanical warning signs. Grinding often points to motor bearing failure. Banging may indicate a loose or broken component inside the unit. Do not wait on these — mechanical issues tend to escalate quickly when a system is running hard in summer heat.

4. Strange Odors When the System Runs

A musty smell can indicate mold or mildew growth inside the unit or ductwork — a common issue in older homes or systems that have not been regularly serviced. A burning smell could point to an electrical issue or overheating components. Either way, unusual odors when your AC runs are a signal to have the system inspected before the problem spreads.

5. Frequent Cycling — On and Off More Than Usual

Air conditioners go through regular on/off cycles to maintain your set temperature. But if your system is cycling on and off every few minutes without ever settling into a steady cooling pattern, something is wrong. This is called short cycling, and it puts significant stress on the compressor. It can also point to refrigerant issues, a dirty evaporator coil, or an oversized system.

6. High Humidity Indoors

Your air conditioner does more than lower the temperature — it also removes moisture from the air. If your home feels sticky or humid even when the AC is running, the system may not be dehumidifying properly. This is both a comfort issue and a potential indoor air quality concern.

7. Rising Energy Bills Without a Change in Usage

If your electric bill is significantly higher than it was at the same time last year and you have not changed your habits, your air conditioner may be losing efficiency. As systems age or develop problems, they have to work harder to produce the same amount of cooling — and that extra effort shows up on your utility bill. In the Central Valley, where AC accounts for a large portion of summer energy use, this difference can be substantial.

8. Moisture or Leaks Around the Unit

Some condensation around an AC unit is normal. But pooling water or active leaking around the indoor or outdoor unit is not. It can indicate a blocked drain line or, more seriously, a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks are not just an equipment issue — they require certified handling by an EPA-qualified technician.

9. Uneven Cooling From Room to Room

If some rooms in your home are noticeably warmer than others, the system may not be distributing air correctly. This can be caused by duct leaks, blockages, or improper balancing — and in a larger home, it can be a sign that the system was never properly sized or configured for the layout.

10. The System Is Over 10–12 Years Old and Repairs Are Adding Up

Age alone is not a reason to replace an AC system, but age combined with recurring repair calls is. If your system is approaching or past the 10–12 year mark and you have been calling for service more than once or twice per cooling season, the math on continued repairs versus a replacement starts to shift. A qualified HVAC professional can help you evaluate whether you are at that crossover point.

When to Call a Professional

A few of the items on this list — like changing a dirty air filter — are things a homeowner can handle. Most of them are not. Refrigerant issues, electrical components, motor failures, and duct problems require trained technicians with the right certifications and equipment.

JC Melton Air Conditioning has served Fresno and Clovis homes for more than 70 years. Our team includes NATE Certified, ATT Certified, and EPA Certified technicians who can accurately diagnose what your system needs — and give you an honest recommendation without upselling you on repairs or replacements you do not need.
