Indoor Air Quality Services in Fresno, CA
Indoor air quality affects the health, comfort, and energy costs of every home. JC Melton Air Conditioning offers two core indoor air quality services for residential and commercial properties throughout Fresno, Clovis, and the Central Valley: temperature zoning systems and air duct cleaning. Temperature zoning allows homeowners to heat and cool specific areas of the home independently, reducing energy waste by up to 33% compared to a central thermostat without setback. Air duct cleaning addresses the build-up of dust, debris, and potential mold contamination in forced-air heating and cooling systems. Whether you are experiencing hot and cold spots in your home, allergy symptoms, or rising energy bills, JC Melton can evaluate your system and recommend the right solution. Temperature Zoning Systems
Control heating and cooling comfort where you want it, when you want it. With a temperature zoning system, you won’t be heating empty rooms or over-cooling one area in order to cool another. Zoning is a comfortable, energy-efficient way to enjoy the temperature you want in every room — think of it as controlling your heating and cooling the same way you control your lights.
Comfort
Every home has at least two zones: the living area and the sleeping area, which are rarely used at the same time. Then there is upstairs and downstairs, rooms that are used a lot (family rooms) and rooms that may not be used often (formal dining rooms). And, of course, someone in the family likes it warm while someone else likes it cool. Temperature zoning makes it possible for everyone to be comfortable.
Efficiency
No need for a heating and cooling system for every room. Zoning systems use dampers in your ductwork that open and close as needed based on each zone’s thermostat settings. When a zone doesn’t need to be heated or cooled, the dampers close to save energy and maximize comfort elsewhere.
Convenience
With the flexibility of a thermostat in each zone, there’s no more cranking up the settings in one area to affect another.
Conservation
You’ll only be heating and cooling areas as needed, so you’ll be saving energy. When combined with programmable thermostats, you can save up to 33 percent off your energy bills with a temperature zoning system, when used as directed and compared to a central thermostat without setback.
Eliminate hot and cold spots throughout your home by controlling temperature on a zone-by-zone basis.
Is Temperature Zoning Right for Your Home?
Temperature zoning is highly recommended if your home has:
- Multiple levels
- Rooms with large windows
- Large open areas such as vaulted ceilings or a foyer
- Rooms in a finished basement or attic
- Rooms with an exposed concrete floor
- An indoor swimming pool or hot tub
- Rooms that are consistently too hot or too cold
Temperature zoning is also highly recommended if you:
- Have young children
- Spend most of your day at home
- Have rooms that are used only occasionally
- Have occupied rooms in the attic or basement
Air Duct Cleaning
What Is Air Duct Cleaning?
Air duct cleaning refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced-air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans, fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing.
If not properly installed, maintained, and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen, or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (such as mold) increases, and spores from such growth may be released into the home’s living space. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people who are exposed to them.
It is important that any duct cleaning service provider agrees to clean all components of the system and is qualified to do so. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, negating any potential benefits.
When Should You Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned?
You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if:
- There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system
- Ducts are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects
- Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris, or particles are being released into the home from your supply registers
If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms, and a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts shows no indication of contamination, heavy dust deposits, or mold, having your air ducts cleaned may be unnecessary. It is normal for return registers to collect dust as air is pulled through the grate — this does not indicate that your ducts are heavily contaminated and the registers can be vacuumed or removed and cleaned.
If family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms that you think might be related to your home environment, discuss the situation with your doctor before scheduling duct cleaning.
What to Expect From a Duct Cleaning Service
Typically, a service provider will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. An inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust and contaminants than if the ducts were left alone — which is why it is important to use a qualified, properly equipped provider.
Some service providers may also propose applying chemical biocides or sealants to the inside of the ductwork. These treatments should only be applied after the system has been properly cleaned of all visible dust and debris, and you should be fully informed before agreeing to any chemical treatments.
Note: Sealing duct air leaks is a separate practice from duct cleaning and can help save energy on heating and cooling bills.
